SSTDP #11: “It’s just a phase.”
Depression is not just a phase. It’s not some stage everyone goes through in life. It’s not some silly little period of darkness everyone goes in and out of. It’s a very serious and crippling mental illness. In some cases (chronic depression / dysthymia), depression can last for many years and persist throughout one’s lifetime. Simply dismissing one’s suffering because you think the person will magically stop being depressed is only detrimental to recovery. They need compassion and support, not invalidation.
